Cardiff hires Solskjaer as new manager

CARDIFF, Wales: Cardiff hired former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Premier League club’s new manager on Thursday.

The 40-year-old Solskjaer left Molde in his native Norway to take over at Cardiff, which is 17th in the 20-team Premier League — a point and a place above the relegation zone.  

 

Solskjaer replaced Malky Mackay, who was fired last week after losing a power struggle with the Welsh club’s Malaysian owner, Vincent Tan. Mackay had guided Cardiff into English football’s top division for the first time in 51 years, and also to the 2012 League Cup final.  

 

“Cardiff City Football Club are delighted to announce that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has joined the club as first-team manager,” the club said in a short statement on its website.  

 

“Following discussions with Tan Sri Vincent Tan and club chairman Mehmet Dalman, Ole, joining Cardiff City from Molde FK, today met with his new squad at the Vale training ground.”  

 

No details were given on the length of Solskjaer’s contract.  

 

He is scheduled to attend a news conference later Thursday.  

 

Solskjaer spent 11 years at United from 1996-2007, capturing six league titles and famously scoring the winning goal in injury time in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.  

 

He retired in 2007 after failing to recover from a serious knee injury, but remained at United in a coaching and ambassadorial role and went on to become the club’s reserve-team manager.  

 

He coached Molde from 2011, winning back-to-back titles in his first two seasons and then the Norwegian Cup in his third.  

 

Solskjaer was linked to jobs in the Premier League at Aston Villa and Blackburn last year, but stayed in Norway for family reasons.  

 

However, he was immediately installed as favorite to succeed Malkay after the Scot was fired on Friday and held talks with Tan and Dalman at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on Wednesday before the team’s match against the Premier League leaders. AP

GRENOBLE, France: Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is to turn 45 on Friday while lying comatose in a French hospital after suffering critical head injuries in a ski accident.

Doctors and family members were tight-lipped Thursday about the condition  of the German racing great, who has been hospitalised since Sunday, when he slammed his head against a rock while skiing in the French Alps.

 

There have been conflicting statements about the speed the seven-time world  racing champion was going when the tragedy befell him in the Meribel ski resort, where he has a property.

 

The rock impact split the helmet Schumacher  was wearing in two, according to a source close to the investigation.

 

The Ferrari F1 team where Schumacher spent many years announced it would on  Friday hold a “silent gathering” in front of the Grenoble hospital for the

birthday of the retired sportsman, who is being kept in an induced coma.

 

Jean Todt, former head of the team, was at Schumacher’s bedside on Thursday  along with Schumacher’s wife Corinna.

 

The hospital and Schumacher’s manager had briefed the press daily since the  accident. But they did not do so on Thursday, instead promising to communicate only if there was something new to report.

 

Schumacher has had two operations to remove bleeding and pressure on his  brain.

 

His media representative, Sabine Kehm, said Wednesday Schumacher was stable  though still critical.

 

The hospital has been faced with intense media pressure from the worldwide  interest in its famous patient. A vacant lot nearby has been turned into an impromptu parking lot for numerous television satellite vans.

 

Kehm earlier in the week said some people had tried to sneak into  Schumacher’s room, one dressed as a priest.

 

The three medical professors treating him — two neurosurgeons and the head  of the anesthetic and intensive care department — have also been thrown into the spotlight.

 

They have appeared at the two press conferences to explain the latest  developments. While they have refused to speculate on how Schumacher’s  condition may evolve, they agree that his age and fitness could help with  recovery.

 

Schumacher’s accident has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from fans  shocked to see their idol hovering so close to death after having cheated it so many times on the racing track.

 

Yet questions have emerged over exactly how the accident happened in a  small, seemingly innocuous off-piste section of Meribel located between two ski slopes — one classed easy and the other intermediate.

 

Prosecutors have opened a probe into the accident, as is common practice in  France in such cases, and are exploring the theory that Schumacher was skiing

at great speed when he fell.

 

But Kehm told reporters earlier in the week that the former racer was not  skiing fast when he fell.

 

“He seems to have hit a rock as he took a turn. It was a chain of  unfortunate circumstances,” she said.

 

She added that Schumacher was with his 14-year-old son Mick at the time of  the accident, as well as a small group of friends.

 

“He was not going quickly, because it seems he helped a friend who had  fallen down,” she said.

 

Schumacher dominated Formula One from his debut in 1991, winning more world  titles and races than any other driver.

 

He first retired aged 37 but was unable to resist the lure of the track. In  2010, he came out of retirement but was unable to recover his previous  performance and quit for good in 2012.

 

As an F1 racer, Schumacher was known for his daring overtaking manoeuvres,  his at-times almost reckless abandon in the pursuit of victory and his mastery of tricky conditions presented by rain. AFP

MINNEAPOLIS: Authorities said Thursday they have discovered a body in the ruins of a Minneapolis apartment fire, as investigators were honing in on natural gas as a potential cause of the explosion and blaze that left 14 other people injured.

Fire Chief John Fruetel said the investigation was ongoing and the fire's exact cause was still unknown Thursday — and may never be determined.

 

But, he said, because of the nature of the debris field and because some witnesses spoke of an odor, investigators were focusing on a gas explosion as a possibility.

 

Becca Virden, a spokeswoman for CenterPoint Energy, said there were no natural gas leaks in the system and the utility received no reports of a suspicious odor before the blast.

 

Fire officials say they received a call about an explosion about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, and within minutes a fire raged through the three-story building.

 

In sub-zero temperatures, paramedics responded to find victims on the ground, some with injuries that suggested they may have fallen multiple stories.

 

Fruetel said that as of Thursday afternoon, authorities had identified 13 of the 14 people injured. Authorities released no identifying information about the person found dead Thursday. The body was turned over to the medical examiner.

 

Of the injured, three people remained in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center, while six were in satisfactory condition, according to the hospital.

 

University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, said it was treating at least two patients Thursday: one was in serious condition with broken bones and one was in good condition with back pain.

Shortly before the body was found Thursday, Fruetel said that two people remained unaccounted for and crews would continue to remove debris from the site in a slow, respectful manner.

 

The apartment building, which also houses a grocery store, is in the heart of Minneapolis' Somali community. Several spoke of the heartache of not knowing whether their loved ones made it out of the building alive.

 

Katra Ali Hethar, of Waite Park in central Minnesota, said her husband was among the missing. Her eyes watered and she was emotional as she spoke about her husband, who moved to Minneapolis because he was looking for work.

 

"I was talking to him that happy New Year's night, and that is something I can't get out of my head," she said through a translator, as she grasped her head with her hands. "I was told he might have burned in that building."

 

Hethar said her husband and his roommate were still missing. She was among several who said they went from hospital to hospital, hoping to find them.

 

She said police took DNA from her husband's sons, so they could positively identify any remains that were found.

 

Shareef Hassan said his friend was also one of the missing.

 

"I got heartbreak," Hassan said. "I hope everything is going to be OK."

 

Betsy Hodges, who was sworn in as Minneapolis' new mayor earlier Thursday, said she knows it's an agonizing time for families.

 

"The city stands with you," she said, adding. "When one part of our community is hurting, our entire community is hurting."

Chelsea mungkin terpaksa melepaskan sama ada Fernando Torres atau Demba Ba jika mereka mahu memiliki Radamel Falcao, menurut laporan di Perancis.    Falcao baru saja menyertai Monaco musim panas lepas namun spekulasi menyebut beliau tidak gembira bersama kelab barunya dan boleh disambar oleh mana-mana kelab elit Eropah.   Chelsea dipercayai mahu membawa Falcao ke Liga Perdana Inggeris musim panas lepas, tapi telah ditewaskan dengan tawaran Monaco sebanyak £52 juta.   Namun dengan the Blues masih lagi memburu penyerang berkelas dunia, lebih-lebih lagi pembelian sementara Samuel Eto’o hanya ada kontrak setahun yang berakhir musim panas nanti, mereka boleh kembali mencari Falcao.   Dan menurut majalah Perancis, Le10Sport, Monaco tidak menolak untuk menjual penyerang antarabangsa Colombia itu, tapi akan mahukan £80 juta.   Alternatif lain menurut majalah itu ialah Monaco menerima Torres atau Ba dari Chelsea sebagai pertukarannya.   Namun perjanjian sebegini masih membuatkan the Blues kekurangan penyerang selain dari Monaco meminta harga yang cukup tinggi dan ia cadangan yang pasti tidak menggembirakan Jose Mourinho.

Joe Cole Tak Berhasrat Pindah

Joe Cole telah menafikan laporan perselisihan dengan pengurus West Ham, Sam Allardyce, akan melihat dia mendapatkan langkah perpindahan Januari.   Midfielder, Cole tidak gembira apabila dia dikeluarkan sebelum separuh masa dalam kekalahan 3-0 derby London Sabtu lalu di tempat sendiri kepada bekas kelabnya, Chelsea.   The Hammers kini di ambang zon penyingkiran Liga Perdana dan akan melayan Fulham hujung minggu ini di pertembungan yang mereka tidak boleh kalah.   Cole mengakui tidak gembira dengan peristiwa baru-baru ini, namun berkata, "Saya kecewa seperti sesiapa saja selepas perlawanan Sabtu ini dengan Chelsea tetapi hanya fokus pada masa ini dan sabar, bekerja keras dan membantu pasukan menempuh kesukaran yang kami lalui pada masa ini.   "Saya benar-benar menikmati kembali di West Ham kerana ia kelab yang begitu bermakna kepada saya.    Ketika skuad masih ada banyak permainan untuk musim ini dan saya berazam untuk memainkan peranan saya dalam memastikan kami mencapai matlamat yang telah kami tetapkan."   "Saya gembira di kelab dan satu-satunya cara saya akan pergi adalah jika mereka beritahu saya yang mereka tak mahu saya lagi."

Ballack : England tidak berada tahap Jerman

Michael Ballack telah memperkecilkan England dengan mendakwa skuad Roy Hodgson tidak berada pada tahap yang sama seperti rival Piala Dunia, Jerman.

 

Kedua-dua negara itu akan bertemu satu sama lain dalam persahabatan malam ini di Wembley, namun bekas midfielder, Ballack yakin negaranya adalah jauh lebih hebat daripada The Three Lions.

 

"Saya tak lihat England berada di tahap yang sama macam pasukan seperti Jerman atau Sepanyol. Mereka agak ketinggalan," katanya.

 

"Mereka ada ramai pemain berbakat, tapi masih nama besar. Kami sentiasa sangat menghormati mereka apabila kami bermain menentang England."

 

"Ini bukan perlawanan persahabatan sebenar. England bertemu Jerman dan ia sentiasa persaingan yang hebat."

 

Ballack, yang memenangi 98 caps untuk Jerman, juga yakin bahawa England perlu memenuhi jangkaan besar kepada mereka di Brazil menjadi positif jika mereka mahu mengekalkan harapan di dalam kejohanan.

 

"Di Piala Dunia akan datang England mesti menggunakan nama mereka, menggunakan kualiti mereka dan mempunyai keyakinan. Kemudian segala-galanya adalah mungkin," katanya.
