Spurs fans in the dock for shameful attack Read more: Spurs fans in the dock for shameful attack

LONDON: Mark Clattenburg has included the shameful scenes at the Emirates in his referee's report after Tottenham supporters showered Arsenal's Theo Walcott with coins.

The FA will examine video footage of the incident involving Walcott, who was pelted as he made an innocuous gesture indicating the score while being carried round the perimeter track.
Walcott, out for up to four weeks with a knee injury, was by the side of the pitch waiting for a stretcher when Spurs fans, angry at their team's 2-0 surrender, began hurling coins, a lighter, a water bottle and a bread roll at him.
The Arsenal forward, who will miss four league games and the FA Cup tie at home to Coventry if scans reveal strained knee ligaments, responded by smiling and raised two fingers to signal the score.
He is not expected to be charged with misconduct by the FA but they could charge both clubs with failing to control supporters following the distasteful incident.
According to those close to the incident, a minority of Tottenham supporters were chanting "let him die" as Walcott received treatment.
Walcott, who started the game up front because Olivier Giroud was ill and Nicklas Bendtner injured, took it all in good humour.
Arsenal have CCTV footage of the section, which housed 3,000 of the 5,000 visitors, but admit it will be a painstaking process to identify the missile-throwers so Spurs can deal with the culprits.
Last season Arsenal banned one of their own supporters after he threw a banana at then Spurs winger Gareth Bale at White Hart Lane on March 3.
Walcott's teammate Jack Wilshere was banned for a one-fingered insult aimed at Manchester City supporters during their 6-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium last month. Wilshere reacted under intense provocation but was still punished by the FA.
Wilshere said: "Theo's a bit smarter than me, I suppose, but I think the Spurs fans were giving him a bit of stick.
"He'll be an Arsenal legend now. They were giving it to him and he's given a little bit back. People have got to look at it as banter. The Arsenal fans will love that. They love Theo and this is only going to help him."
Tottenham were put away when Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla finished off a lovely team move in the first half and Czech ace Tomas Rosicky netted for the first time this season after the break, seizing on a mistake by Danny Rose.
Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood was condemned after the defeat for playing a 4-4-2 formation, but he insisted that was not the case.
Sherwood, who has been knocked out of both domestic cups since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas, said: "We just had 11 players on the field and tried to rotate to fill up every area of the field. Manchester United have been playing 4-4-2 and won everything for the last 10 years.
"I don't think we ever had just two players in midfield. We showed we can mix it with the best team in the league. We weren't disgraced."

City boss keeps faith in injury plagued Jovetic

LONDON: Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini insists he has not lost faith in injury plagued Stevan Jovetic (pic), but admits his opinion could change by the end of the season.

The Montenegro forward arrived at the Etihad in a STG22 million (RM119 million) deal this summer, but has only managed five appearances after suffering a series of injuries and a bout of illness.
Pellegrini has admitted that he could begin to lose patience if the problems persist and has challenged the 24-year-old to prove his fitness during the second half of the season.
"It is very difficult to know with Jovetic," Pellegrini told the Sunday Mirror.
"But I believe what the player says and if he says he has a muscle problem I'm absolutely sure he has a muscle problem.
"We hope it was bad luck for the first part of the season and we can use him in the second half of the season because he is a very important player.
"It's impossible for the players to be 100 per cent for every game, but there are different degrees of injuries. I am optimistic.
"At the end of the season, maybe I change my opinion. But at the moment, I continue trusting him." Daily Mail

Syria rebels besiege Qaeda-linked jihadists

Syrian rebels laid siege to jihadists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in their northern stronghold Monday, hoping to crush the Al-Qaeda affiliate accused of widespread abuses.

A broad coalition of moderates and Islamists opposed to President Bashar al-Assad is seeking to drive ISIL -- which is accused of kidnapping, torturing and killing rival rebels and civilians -- from its stronghold in the northern city of Raqa.
The new front in Syria's increasingly complex civil war opened less than three weeks away from a planned peace conference, for which the United Nations has started sending out invitations, excluding Assad's ally Iran.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels in Raqa managed to free 50 Syrian prisoners held by the Sunni extremists, who are believed to be holding hundreds of prisoners, including foreign journalists.
Raqa is the only provincial capital lost by the regime since the conflict began in March 2011 with peaceful protests demanding democratic reform but escalated into a full-blown war when Assad's forces launched
a brutal crackdown on dissent.
The city later fell into the hands of ISIL, the latest incarnation of Al-Qaeda's Iraq affiliate, which joined the fight against the regime in late spring 2013.
The rebels initially welcomed the battle-hardened jihadists, but tensions mounted as ISIL was accused of imposing a reign of terror in areas where it operates, especially Raqa.
Three powerful rebel alliances on Friday launched what activists called a second "revolution," and have advanced quickly, expelling ISIL from checkpoints and bases across Aleppo, Idlib and Hama provinces.
The Observatory said the main group besieging ISIL's Raqa headquarters is Al-Nusra Front, which is also affiliated with Al-Qaeda but is seen as less extreme and has long competed with ISIL to represent the global terror network in Syria.
ISIL has struck back, including with a car bombing at a rebel checkpoint in Darkush, Idlib that killed an unknown number of fighters on Monday, the Britain-based Observatory said.
In Aleppo, a 16-year-old ISIL suicide attacker detonated himself at a rebel checkpoint, killing one opposition fighter and wounding several more.
A key complaint among the rebels fighting ISIL is that the self-styled Islamic state sought hegemony over areas under its control, while activists and rights groups accused it of torturing and killing its rivals, including with public executions.
On Monday, the body of a decapitated child was found near ISIL's headquarters in Kafranbel, Idlib, the Observatory said.
The rebel side also committed abuses, executing two ISIL fighters and burning one of their bodies in the Haydariyeh district of Aleppo, "in front of neighbourhood residents", the group added.
While many in the opposition welcomed the war on ISIL, some fear it threatens to distract from the battle with Assad's forces, which have continued to bombard rebel-held areas.
In rebel-held Bazaa in Aleppo province, an air raid killed 12 people including three children, the Observatory said.
It was the latest in a regime air campaign against Aleppo that killed some 550 people between December 15 and January 2, according to the monitoring group.
The Syrian conflict is estimated to have claimed more than 130,000 lives, and has forced millions more to flee their homes.
A security official in Damascus told AFP the fighting between the rebels and ISIL was "expected, and will become more violent".
UN leader Ban Ki-moon, meanwhile, started sending out invitations to the so-called Geneva 2 peace talks, but Assad's key ally Iran was not on the first list, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.
Iran brushed off the move, saying it would only accept an offer to participate that respected its "honour".
The decision may help pave the way for the opposition National Coalition, which has repeatedly stipulated Iran must not be invited, to participate.
The Coalition, which re-elected Ahmad Jarba as its leader on Sunday, will discuss Tuesday whether to attend the talks, although a key group -- the Syrian National Council -- has already announced its boycott.
The 30 countries invited to the Geneva talks include Saudi Arabia, a major backer of the Syrian opposition, as well as Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- the five UN Security Council permanent members -- and Syria's neighbours such as Turkey, Iraq and Jordan.
US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet on January 13 in a bid to decide Iran's role in ending the nearly three-year-old war, said UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq.
Tehran's role has been one of many obstacles that have bedeviled efforts by Ban and UN-Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to organize the conference.
The makeup of the Syrian opposition and governm
ent delegations has also called friction.

300 sick in Japan after eating contaminated food

More than 300 people across Japan have fallen ill after eating frozen food products contaminated with pesticide, reports said Tuesday.
Shoppers have reported vomiting, diarrhoea and other symptoms of food poisoning after eating food produced at a plant in Gunma, north of Tokyo, according to surveys carried out by the Asahi Shimbun and other local media.
The plant, run by a subsidiary of the nation's largest seafood firm Maruha Nichiro Holdings, is at the centre of the nation's latest food poisoning scandal.
Japanese police have launched an investigation into the company after it revealed last month that some of its frozen food products were tainted with malathion, an agricultural chemical often used to kill aphid in corn and rice fields.
According to local media, police suspect the pesticide was mixed into the products at the plant, which pro
duced frozen foods including pizza and lasagna.
Asahi Shimbun said it found the number of people who fell sick "exceeded 300", while national broadcaster NHK said Monday that 359 people had taken ill.
Maruha Nichiro said that it had received some 460,000 phone calls from consumers in connection with the incident, including complaints about sickening after eating the products, a company spokesman said.
Calls also included complaints about the unusual odour of some products and ways to return the products, the spokesman said.
The food maker had so far recovered some 1.2 million packages of potentially tainted products out of 6.4 million it wants to recall, he added.
Maruha Nichiro said that the products in question had not been shipped overseas.
The spokesman declined to comment on a possible impact of the incident on the company's earnings, only saying: "We have to specify the cause first."
While incidents of food poisoning have occurred in Japan, including in August 2012 when E. coli-contaminated cabbage killed seven people and sickened dozens, food standards are relatively high.
However, the country's reputation for safe and high quality food suffered a body-blow from the after-effects of the Fukushima atomic disaster, in which acres of farmland were polluted by nuclear fall-out.

Arctic air brings record cold to huge swath of US Read more: Arctic air brings record cold to huge swath of US

A blast of bone-chilling cold reaching lows not seen in two decades gripped the United States early Tuesday, snarling air travel, closing schools and prompting calls for people to stay inside.

Superlatives of cold-talk abounded, even in midwestern states used to chest-high snow and bitter cold, as the National Weather Service said the deep freeze was making its way east.
Air travel was a nightmare, stranding many travelers trying to head home from year's end holidays.
More than 4,300 US flights were canceled Monday -- nearly half of those in Chicago -- and more than 6,500 were delayed, according to FlightAware, a flight-monitoring site.
Airline JetBlue said it was reducing operations at four airports in the bustling northeast corridor -- JFK, La Guardia, Newark and Boston -- until 10:00 am (0300 GMT) Tuesday.
More than a dozen deaths were blamed on the frigid weather.
A shift in a weather pattern known as the "polar
vortex" triggered a drastic drop in temperatures to lows not seen in two decades.
It coincided with wind chill warnings in much of the east of the country.
Comertown, Montana, recorded the lowest wind chill value so far at -63 Fahrenheit (-53 Celsius) while North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota were not much warmer.
That was significantly colder than the South Pole, which recorded a wind chill reading of -29 Fahrenheit.
In Minneapolis, Minnesota, where people scoff when cities like Washington, D.C. panic and shut down with even a moderate snowfall, the newspaper The Star Tribune gave a graphic description of what happens when, for instance, the overnight temperature Monday hit 23 below Fahrenheit.
"The windchill and cold are freezing exposed flesh in five minutes," it said.
The paper said life has "slowed to a crawl across the state."
"It’s a blistering cold spell destined for Minnesota winter weather lore," it added.
Even the typically temperate Deep South was feeling the chill with a hard freeze warning threatening crops and livestock.
Early Tuesday in Washington, DC, the temperature was a relatively mild 12 degrees Fahrenheit early Tuesday, but blustery winds blew leaves and trash swirling in the air.
Deaths blamed on the frigid weather included a 71-year-old woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease who froze to death after getting lost in New York state.
The body of a 90-year-old woman was found face down in the snow next to her car in Ohio on Monday morning, the Toledo Blade reported.
At least a dozen other people were reportedly killed in crashes on icy roads, including four people whose sport utility vehicle slid off a rural Minnesota highway and fell into the Mississippi River.
Four Chicago men aged 48 to 63 died of apparent heart attacks while shoveling the snow over the weekend, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The cold snap came after two massive winter storms snarled travel, grounded thousands of flights and dumped as much as two feet (60 centimeters) of snow in the first few days of the year.
Chicago was among scores of towns and cities which told parents to keep their children at home rather than risk sending them out into winds so bitter that skin could freeze in a matter of minutes.
The governor of Minnesota canceled school across the entire state on Monday.
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn declared a state of emergency and called up the National Guard to help rescue stranded motorists as high winds whipped up blinding snow.
"We are facing a dangerous combination of low temperatures, black ice and snow drifts," Quinn said, as he urged people to stay off the roads.
Quinn praised the "heroic" efforts of National Guard troops who cleared a 375-vehicle backup and a forestry officer who rescued seven stranded people and two of their pets using a snowmobile.
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, officials warned residents to stay indoors and urged schools to shut down as temperatures dropped to -12 Fahrenheit, with the wind chill making it feel like -37.
"Police are reaching out to homeless citizens in order to help them find the nearest shelter," city spokeswoman Sarah DeRoo told AFP.
Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard barred everyone except emergency workers from driving at the height of the storm Sunday and urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary on Monday.
"This extreme cold poses a serious health and safety risk," he warned.
But with thousands of people without power after electrical lines were felled, home was not always the best option.
Those who couldn't stay with family or friends were urged to seek out community centers which were open
ed as temporary shelters.
The extreme cold disrupted flights and classes in Canada as well. In the Atlantic island province of Newfoundland, more than 30,000 people were without power.
Nationwide, officials warned of "treacherous" travel conditions, but meteorologists said a warming trend would begin mid-week.

US Senate confirms Yellen as Federal Reserve chair Read more: US Senate confirms Yellen as Federal Reserve chair

The US Senate confirmed Janet Yellen as the new leader of the Federal Reserve, marking the first time a woman has headed the world's most powerful central bank.

President Barack Obama's nominee earned bipartisan support in the bitterly divided chamber, but the 56-26 vote was still among the closest in the 100-year history of the institution.
Several senators who supported Yellen, currently Fed vice-chair, arrived too late for the vote.
Yellen, 67, will replace current Chairman Ben Bernanke, who steps down on January 31 after eight years in the job, during which the pair dealt with the country's worst economic crisis since the Great Depre
ssion.
Bernanke's successor's main task will be ensuring the US economy does not slip backwards at a time when other countries are beset by weakness.
Especially crucial will be further pushing down the American jobless rate, which fell to 7.0 percent in November, still significantly higher than Bernanke, Yellen and other Fed policymakers have deemed satisfactory.
Obama cheered the Senate approval, saying Yellen would serve the central bank and the country well.
"The American people will have a fierce champion who understands that the ultimate goal of economic and financial policymaking is to improve the lives, jobs and standard of living of American workers and their families," he said in a statement.
"As one of our nation’s most respected economists and a leading voice at the Fed for more than a decade -- and vice chair for the past three years -- Janet helped pull our economy out of recession and put us on the path of steady growth."
Yellen has built a strong reputation as an academic economist, and as a veteran policymaker at the Fed she is not expected to veer far from the policies set by Bernanke.
Married to economics Nobel Prize winner George Akerlof, she has a long-term interest in the impact of joblessness on the economy, and has helped keep Fed policy focused on bringing down unemployment.
She has also been closely identified with the Fed's opening up of its once-mysterious policy thinking, with the central bank communicating what it sees in the economy and the expected direction of monetary policy far more openly than 10 years ago.
"Americans should feel reassured that we will have her at the helm of the Fed as our nation continues to recover from the Great Recession," said Senate Banking Committee chairman Tim Johnson.
"Dr. Yellen's leadership will also be critical as the Fed completes Wall Street reform rulemaking and continues to enhance the stability of our financial sector."
The American Bankers Association, which has fought the Fed's push for tough regulations in the wake of the 2008 crisis, cautiously welcomed Yellen's approval.
"As the Federal Reserve heightens its focus on bank regulation, her experience supervising banks in the Federal Reserve system provides her with a valuable perspective. We look forward to working with the Federal Reserve under her leadership."
Her nomination encountered resistance from several Republicans concerned with the Fed's huge efforts to pump money into the economy over the past four years, including its $85 billion a month bond buying stimulus program of the past year, soon to be scaled back.
"The stock market has become addicted to the Fed's easy money policies," said veteran Senate Republican Chuck Grassley.
"It appears that Ms. Yellen will continue to pursue these misguided policies."
However, with the economy now moving at a pace the Fed has tentatively ruled sustainable, the policy making Federal Open Market Committee, led by Bernanke and Yellen, decided at its December meeting to taper the program, starting with a $10 billion cutback this month.
The move came after months of delay and the step convinced Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, who had been concerned about the size of the stimulus, to back Yellen.
"I now feel comfortable supporting Vice-Chair Yellen's nomination," he said in a statement.

Rooney's future uncertain

DAVID Moyes admits there is no guarantee Wayne Rooney will sign a new contract at Old Trafford if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Rooney, who will miss today's FA Cup third-round tie at home to Swansea with a groin injury, will enter the final year of his STG250,000 (RM1.3 million)-a-week deal in the summer.
United are anxious to open negotiations over a new one but it is thought the 28-year-old wants to wait until after the World Cup before assessing his future and the club's progress.
United's hopes of retaining the Premier League title suffered another blow on New Year's Day when they slipped to seventh in the table after a defeat by Tottenham.
It raised fears that Rooney, subject of a STG30 million bid from Chelsea last summer, could leave if United cannot qualify for the Champions League.
Moyes said on Friday: "We would have to wait and see what happened in that situation."
Asked if the England striker is happy at United, Moyes said: "I think if you look at his performances he's certainly playing at his best."
Rooney's groin injury has kept him out of two of United's last five games, although Moyes says he has 'a chance' of returning for the League Cup semi-final against Sunderland on Tuesday.
Moyes said Ashley Young also has a shoulder injury as a result of a challenge from Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris last Wednesday.
Referee Howard Webb took no action, a decision described as 'scandalous' by Moyes, who thought the challenge was worthy of a penalty and red card for Lloris. Daily Mail

Rogers hits ton as Australia extend lead beyond 400 Read more: Rogers hits ton as Australia extend lead beyond 400

Opener Chris Rogers scored his second century of the series as Australia tightened their grip on the final Ashes Test and closed in on a 5-0 series whitewash over England in Sydney on Sunday.

The 36-year-old left-hander cut part-time offspinner Kevin Pietersen to the boundary rope for his third Test century -- all of them against England.
Australia went to lunch at 248 for seven -- an overall lead of 419 with eight sessions left to play.
Rogers, who scored 116 in the second innings of the fourth Test in Melbourne, was unbeaten on 114 off 163 balls at the interval with 14 fours while Ryan Harris was on one.
Rogers shared in a fifth-wicket partnership of 109 with George Bailey, who was dismissed shortly after first-hour drinks when he top-edged Stuart Broad to Scott Borthwick at deep square leg for 46.
Brad Haddin became the highest-scoring Australian wicketkeeper in a Test ser
ies with his breezy 28 off 40 balls.
Haddin, the nemesis of the English bowlers in this series with his lower middle-order batting, finished the series with 493 runs at 61.62 to better the previous best held by Adam Gilchrist against South Africa in 2001-02.
Haddin was bowled as he swung at young leg-spinner Borthwick and Mitchell Johnson lasted three balls before he was bowled by Ben Stokes for 4.

Izara Aisyah Anggap Kelab Peminat Hanya Timbulkan Masalah

lebar.

“Segala Yang Berlaku Asam Garam Kehidupan” – Johan As’ari

BACA: “Saya Cari Pembimbing, Allah Temukan Saya Dengan Johan” – Lana Nordin
suka mempermainkan hati wanita.
saya bawa bersama,” – Jelas Johan.

Walaupun umum sedia maklum bahawa Stacy seorang gadis beragama Kristian ia bukan penghalang pencintaan mereka.

Izara Aisyah Minta Tempoh 7 Tahun Dari Kekasih

Arsenal-Spurs tops bill in FA Cup third round Read more: Arsenal-Spurs tops bill in FA Cup third round

LONDON: England’s frenetic festive period gives way to the romance of the FA Cup this weekend, with Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to north London rivals Arsenal the pick of the third-round ties.

Manchester United will once again look to the cups for consolation when they host Swansea City, while Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City will all be seeking to avoid embarrassment at the hands of lower-league teams.
It is now nine years since Arsenal beat United on penalties in the 2005 FA Cup final to claim their last piece of silverware, but as Premier League leaders their star is in the ascendant once again.
However, in old foes Spurs they face a side bolstered by the arrival of new manager Tim Sherwood and bubbling with renewed self-belief after a 2-1 success at United on New Year’s Day.
Frozen out under former manager Andre Villas-Boas, Emmanuel Adebayor continued his impressive recent form with the opening goal at Old Trafford and team-mate Danny Rose has backed him to shine against his former club Arsenal on Saturday.
“He has been like a new signing,” said the Spurs left-back.
“He has scored four goals in his last five games, which is brilliant for us. Considering he didn’t play a game from pre-season until a few weeks ago, his energy levels have actually been brilliant.”
Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Wednesday was tempered by an ankle injury to goal-scorer Nicklas Bendtner, but French striker Olivier Giroud could be fit to face Spurs after an ankle problem of his own.
The two sides last met in the FA Cup in April 2001, when a Robert Pires tap-in earned Arsenal a 2-1 semi-final victory at Old Trafford.
United’s loss to Spurs on Wednesday was their sixth of the Premier League  campaign and left them 11 points off the pace, but they have shown impressive  form in the cup competitions this season.
David Moyes’s side have reached the Champions League last 16 and the semi-finals of the League Cup, and the FA Cup, which United last won in 2004, represents another means of salvaging their season.
Centre-back Jonny Evans says that the players are only slowly coming to terms with the impact of former manager Alex Ferguson’s retirement in May.
“As a player I probably didn’t realise the magnitude of it until I stepped back and looked at it from the outside,” said Evans.
“Some of the results have not gone as planned, but to be fair to the manager and coaching staff, they have never been down in the dumps.
“They have always tried to improve us and I definitely think they are improving us in certain aspects of the game where maybe we were lacking.”
The third-round draw yielded few opportunities for genuine upsets, but Liverpool, Aston Villa and Sunderland all face third-tier opposition in the shape of, respectively, Oldham Athletic, Sheffield United and Carlisle United.
Chelsea, meanwhile, visit Derby County, who recently won seven games in a  row in the second-tier Championship under former England manager Steve  McClaren, while Manchester City travel to Blackburn Rovers.
The biggest mismatch sees non-league Macclesfield Town host Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, who sit 63 places above them in the English league  system, while Bolton Wanderers play Blackpool in a repeat of the 1953 final.

Cardiff hires Solskjaer as new manager

CARDIFF, Wales: Cardiff hired former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Premier League club’s new manager on Thursday.

The 40-year-old Solskjaer left Molde in his native Norway to take over at Cardiff, which is 17th in the 20-team Premier League — a point and a place above the relegation zone.

Solskjaer replaced Malky Mackay, who was fired last week after losing a power struggle with the Welsh club’s Malaysian owner, Vincent Tan. Mackay had guided Cardiff into English football’s top division for the first time in 51 years, and also to the 2012 League Cup final.

“Cardiff City Football Club are delighted to announce that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has joined the club as first-team manager,” the club said in a short statement on its website.

“Following discussions with Tan Sri Vincent Tan and club chairman Mehmet Dalman, Ole, joining Cardiff City from Molde FK, today met with his new squad at the Vale training ground.”

No details were given on the length of Solskjaer’s contract.

He is scheduled to attend a news conference later Thursday.

Solskjaer spent 11 years at United from 1996-2007, capturing six league titles and famously scoring the winning goal in injury time in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

He retired in 2007 after failing to recover from a serious knee injury, but remained at United in a coaching and ambassadorial role and went on to become the club’s reserve-team manager.

He coached Molde from 2011, winning back-to-back titles in his first two seasons and then the Norwegian Cup in his third.

Solskjaer was linked to jobs in the Premier League at Aston Villa and Blackburn last year, but stayed in Norway for family reasons.

However, he was immediately installed as favorite to succeed Malkay after the Scot was fired on Friday and held talks with Tan and Dalman at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on Wednesday before the team’s match against the Premier League leaders. AP

Schumacher to turn 45 while comatose in French hospital Read more: Schumacher to turn 45 while comatose in French hospital

GRENOBLE, France: Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is to turn 45 on Friday while lying comatose in a French hospital after suffering critical head injuries in a ski accident.

Doctors and family members were tight-lipped Thursday about the condition  of the German racing great, who has been hospitalised since Sunday, when he slammed his head against a rock while skiing in the French Alps.

There have been conflicting statements about the speed the seven-time world  racing champion was going when the tragedy befell him in the Meribel ski resort, where he has a property.

The rock impact split the helmet Schumacher  was wearing in two, according to a source close to the investigation.

The Ferrari F1 team where Schumacher spent many years announced it would on  Friday hold a “silent gathering” in front of the Grenoble hospital for the
birthday of the retired sportsman, who is being kept in an induced coma.

Jean Todt, former head of the team, was at Schumacher’s bedside on Thursday  along with Schumacher’s wife Corinna.

The hospital and Schumacher’s manager had briefed the press daily since the  accident. But they did not do so on Thursday, instead promising to communicate only if there was something new to report.

Schumacher has had two operations to remove bleeding and pressure on his  brain.

His media representative, Sabine Kehm, said Wednesday Schumacher was stable  though still critical.

The hospital has been faced with intense media pressure from the worldwide  interest in its famous patient. A vacant lot nearby has been turned into an impromptu parking lot for numerous television satellite vans.

Kehm earlier in the week said some people had tried to sneak into  Schumacher’s room, one dressed as a priest.

The three medical professors treating him — two neurosurgeons and the head  of the anesthetic and intensive care department — have also been thrown into the spotlight.

They have appeared at the two press conferences to explain the latest  developments. While they have refused to speculate on how Schumacher’s  condition may evolve, they agree that his age and fitness could help with  recovery.

Schumacher’s accident has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from fans  shocked to see their idol hovering so close to death after having cheated it so many times on the racing track.

Yet questions have emerged over exactly how the accident happened in a  small, seemingly innocuous off-piste section of Meribel located between two ski slopes — one classed easy and the other intermediate.

Prosecutors have opened a probe into the accident, as is common practice in  France in such cases, and are exploring the theory that Schumacher was skiing
at great speed when he fell.

But Kehm told reporters earlier in the week that the former racer was not  skiing fast when he fell.

“He seems to have hit a rock as he took a turn. It was a chain of  unfortunate circumstances,” she said.

She added that Schumacher was with his 14-year-old son Mick at the time of  the accident, as well as a small group of friends.

“He was not going quickly, because it seems he helped a friend who had  fallen down,” she said.

Schumacher dominated Formula One from his debut in 1991, winning more world  titles and races than any other driver.

He first retired aged 37 but was unable to resist the lure of the track. In  2010, he came out of retirement but was unable to recover his previous  performance and quit for good in 2012.

As an F1 racer, Schumacher was known for his daring overtaking manoeuvres,  his at-times almost reckless abandon in the pursuit of victory and his mastery of tricky conditions presented by rain. AFP

1 body found in apartment fire in US, 14 injured Read more: 1 body found in apartment fire in US, 14 injured

MINNEAPOLIS: Authorities said Thursday they have discovered a body in the ruins of a Minneapolis apartment fire, as investigators were honing in on natural gas as a potential cause of the explosion and blaze that left 14 other people injured.

Fire Chief John Fruetel said the investigation was ongoing and the fire's exact cause was still unknown Thursday — and may never be determined.

But, he said, because of the nature of the debris field and because some witnesses spoke of an odor, investigators were focusing on a gas explosion as a possibility.

Becca Virden, a spokeswoman for CenterPoint Energy, said there were no natural gas leaks in the system and the utility received no reports of a suspicious odor before the blast.

Fire officials say they received a call about an explosion about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, and within minutes a fire raged through the three-story building.

In sub-zero temperatures, paramedics responded to find victims on the ground, some with injuries that suggested they may have fallen multiple stories.

Fruetel said that as of Thursday afternoon, authorities had identified 13 of the 14 people injured. Authorities released no identifying information about the person found dead Thursday. The body was turned over to the medical examiner.

Of the injured, three people remained in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center, while six were in satisfactory condition, according to the hospital.

University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, said it was treating at least two patients Thursday: one was in serious condition with broken bones and one was in good condition with back pain.

Shortly before the body was found Thursday, Fruetel said that two people remained unaccounted for and crews would continue to remove debris from the site in a slow, respectful manner.

The apartment building, which also houses a grocery store, is in the heart of Minneapolis' Somali community. Several spoke of the heartache of not knowing whether their loved ones made it out of the building alive.

Katra Ali Hethar, of Waite Park in central Minnesota, said her husband was among the missing. Her eyes watered and she was emotional as she spoke about her husband, who moved to Minneapolis because he was looking for work.

"I was talking to him that happy New Year's night, and that is something I can't get out of my head," she said through a translator, as she grasped her head with her hands. "I was told he might have burned in that building."

Hethar said her husband and his roommate were still missing. She was among several who said they went from hospital to hospital, hoping to find them.

She said police took DNA from her husband's sons, so they could positively identify any remains that were found.

Shareef Hassan said his friend was also one of the missing.

"I got heartbreak," Hassan said. "I hope everything is going to be OK."

Betsy Hodges, who was sworn in as Minneapolis' new mayor earlier Thursday, said she knows it's an agonizing time for families.

"The city stands with you," she said, adding. "When one part of our community is hurting, our entire community is hurting."

Mohamud Noor, executive director of the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota, said his group opened a fund to collect donations for victims and families. --AP
